This longitudinal analysis focuses on two different, yet structurally related, processes: changes over time in a community's leadership structure, and changes over time of those individuals who occupy leadership positions. The former process occurs over a longer time span and is system centered, while the latter occurs more frequently and is person centered. The changing leadership structure is examined using a model of structural change based upon the degrees of pluralism and factionalism in a leadership configuration. Data from a longitudinal analysis of one rural county suggest that the increasing division of labor and the associated increase in complexity of social organization in a community are positively associated with a greater dispersion of power. The data further indicate a rapid turnover in individual leadership in a 6-year period. This turnover is believed to be largely a sociological process related to the holding of positions in community-specific groups. The analysis is concerned primarily with the development of a model of longitudinal change in community power structure on the basis of multiple data sources and types. This model enables the investigation of both leadership structure and individual leadership within a single framework. Although the analysis develops a model on the basis of multiple data sources, no true test of the model can be made using these data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
