Aim: To investigate serum creatine kinase (sCK) levels in psychiatric inpatients populations to gain a better understanding of sCK elevations and possible causes. Method: A systematic search of Ovid, MedLine, PsychInfo and PsychArticles for literature including a measure of sCK in a psychiatric inpatient population which yielded an initial result of 134 articles. A systematic screening process resulted in 13 articles meeting all of our eligibility criteria. Results: Case studies indicated associations between various psychotropic medications and an elevation in sCK. Longitudinal studies and case note reviews indicated several relevant factors including a diagnosis of schizophrenia and affective psychosis, intramuscular injections and aggressive behaviour. Clinical implications: The results were inconclusive as the case studies provided only anecdotal evidence, and the findings of the longitudinal studies and case note reviews were inconsistent. This systematic review has highlighted a lack of conclusive evidence to explain sCK elevations in psychiatric inpatients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
