The biggest sporting event in the United States, judging by the number of persons who can cram into the arena, is the Memorial Day Indianapolis "500." When this automobile race is run for the 49th time at the end of this month, more than 300,000 will pay to pass through the gates. The annual outpouring at Indianapolis is the greatest manifestation of interest in what used to be a sport but has now turned into a big and confusing business. Auto racing is big and it is going to grow bigger because Detroit, Michigan has discovered that participation in automobile racing, or for that matter even a peripheral, association with it, sells cars. The youth of the nation is interested and youth today is the buying public. A high-performance image is the best way to sell these customers. The degree of industry involvement varies. Ford is the leader. General Motors claims it does not race. |
