Abstrakt: Employs insights derived from Foucault's writing on the technologies of the self and Deleuze and Guattari's figure of the desiring machine to elucidate how the dagongmei or women migrant laborers from the countryside figures not only as a desired producer but also as a desiring consumer in China's new economy. Complex relationship between these two processes of subjectification; Question on whether the consumer revolution in China helps to democratize the social space.
