In the article the research prospects of studying the extract of metric statements of the Kyiv Orthodox Diocese as a source of the historical demography of Ukraine were explored. Features of source were examined, and the potential for further historical and demographic studies was analyzed. Consideration the completeness of the data of the extract of metric statements of the Kyiv Orthodox Diocese of 1778 was the main purpose of the research. Also, composition the characteristics of the source was an important task of this research. In addition, introduction into scientific circulation previously unpublished data and analysis of their reliability was one of the main goals. Also, on specific examples, the analysis of birth rates, marriages and deaths in the Kyiv Orthodox Diocese during the year 1778 was carried out. The subject matter of the article has a wide potential for further research, both purely in the study of historical demography and the study of regional areas, and in general for the study of Ukrainian history in the eighteenth century.
