Abstrakt: A theoretical framework integrating microlocial, household economy. and structural perspectives is presented to explain the gender allocation of farm-speciflc tasks and decision making. Multivariate analysis examines the association of women's task performance and decision making with women's self-identity and other factors, such as farming background, type and size of operation, personal characteristics, and off-farm employment. Data are from a statewide mail survey of 880 Kentucky farm women. Results indicate that self-identity is validated by participation in farm tasks and decision making; structural characteristics of farm enterprises are related to women's participation in farm operations independent of their self-identification, although self-identity is more important in accounting for variations than any other factor. While conjoint and egalitarian farm decision making does occur, overall, women indicate low levels of participation in farm decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
