Employer-employee relationships are foundational to organizational life. These relationships are the focal point in the domains of leader-member exchange and psychological contracts with findings showing important outcomes for both employers and employees (Bunderson, 2001; Robinson & Rousseau, 1994; Wayne, Shore, & Liden, 1997). We have assembled a group of authors taking unique approaches to studying what brings about and influences the relationships and agreements between employers and employees. In one paper, by Jayaweera and colleagues, the authors note that the framework of the psychological contract emphasizes individual perceptions, specifically employees' perceptions, but that the macro-economic context of employees' evaluations of the psychological contract has been ignored. In three of the papers (Loignon & Gooty; Brekashvili, et al; and Darden), the authors implicitly challenge the assumption that the most informative perspective on the employer-employee relationship is the employee's. Thus, there is an opportunity to expand the view of research beyond these well-established ones. As such, our papers evaluate different forms of satisfaction as antecedents and outcomes of these relationships; focus on the dyadic and employer perspectives of these relationships; and account for external contextual factors that affect satisfaction and other outcomes of psychological contracts between employer and employee. In so doing, we contribute to both LMX and psychological contracts literatures.
