Abstrakt: |
The effect of nitrogen oxide towards algal density was investigated. NOx is considered the main source of air pollution in Petaling Jaya and Banting and therefore influences the algal density. The objective of this research was to assess the effect of nitrogen deposition towards the number of algal cells inhabiting 15 free standing trees. Methods involved including field sampling and collection, algal quantification, identification and readings of NOx concentration. The results of this study showed that subaerial algae were found to grow abundantly in polluted area compared to the less polluted ones. The study revealed that NOx significantly increased algal density due to the nitrogen (N) deposition in general. The algal density was higher in polluted area (1191±111×104 cells/cm2, NOx annual average of 66 µg/m3) whereas in the less polluted area, density of algae was significantly lower (819±113 × 104 cells/cm2, NOx annual average of 19 µg/m3). Apatococcus and Trebouxia are the two species dominating the polluted environment. These species were found growing abundantly on the bark of trees and are known to be able to grow well in higher bark pH. Existing in the algal samples along with Apatococcus and Trebouxia are Printzina sp., Trentepohlia sp. and many other unidentified species. Due to low insignificant number of cells, other species was regarded as irrelevant thus not being counted. This study provides a useful baseline data on some pollutant tolerant algal species and effect of N deposition towards terrestrial algae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
