Rafflesia is a holoparasite in the tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia. In Sarawak, Rafflesia tuan-mudae Becc. grows on Tetrastigma sp.. For conservation purposes, we studied microbes from the soil and parts of R. tuan-mudae located in designated block A, B and C areas of Gunung Gading National Park. A total of 35 Tetrastigma stems were reported. However, a high percentage of death at 70% was observed in R. tuan-mudae between the time when the bud swells up to bloom. Biological samples were sampled from active and inactive buds to identify the microbes and their relationships. Isolates from the soil and the debris produce many bacterial colonies and fungi. Thus, the microbial activities associated with Rafflesia tuan-mudae and Tetrastigma sp. need further attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
