In this article, the author discusses the use of a new psychiatric concept "grief therapy" in the funeral services industries of the U.S. by reviewing the concerned concepts illustrated in the book "Death, Grief and Mourning," by Geoffrey Gorer. The author describes that the grief therapy works on the concept of "the costlier the casket, the more therapeutic for the bereaved." In the book, Gorer described radical changes in English mourning over the years. He thought that the modern tendency to discard all mourning ritual is costing heavily in mental distress and maladaptive behavior of bereaved persons. His study was based on interviews with several hundred English people who had suffered a death in the family. |
