Abstrakt: In order to express attentiveness during a conversation, it is usually required for the listener to gyve feedback. For this purpose, listener employs different response tokens. By using the framework of conversational analysis (henceforth CA), this work examines the functions of the token "hala" (ok) in Pahari conversation. The analysis is based on corpus of 7 recorded and transcribed, naturally occurring conversations. The key findings suggest that "hala" is a multifunctional token, with four uses: a 'receipt token', 'surprise token', 'pre-closing token' and an 'agreement token'. This work also reveals that various functions of "hala" are associated with its occurrence in various contexts in turn-constructing units (henceforth TCUs) and that the functions of "hala" are also associated with intonational mappings.
