Abstrakt: The aim of this investigation was to understand the effect of filler volume fraction on mechanical strength and failure mode of aluminium bonded with epoxy-based adhesive. The filler used is iron ore with different filler volume fraction. The filler volume fraction of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, and 60% was used in this investigation. The mechanical strength of the adhesive joints was determined by utilizing T-peel and single lap-shear tests. The failure mode of the adhesive joints and the distribution of the fillers was examined by using macro and scanning electron microscope photos, respectively. The effect of filler volume fraction on the mechanical strength of adhesive was investigated by choosing the highest peel strength and shear strength. The optimum value in peel and shear tests were attained with filler volume fraction of 30%. The joints fail in mixed failure mode (cohesive and adhesive mode). However, the failure mode of filler with 60% volume fraction is in adhesive mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
