Abstrakt: The aim of the present paper is to analyse the syntactic structure of Sesotho idioms. The study seeks to show that there is a violation of grammar rules in Sesotho idiomatic expressions. For example there is a deletion of particular morphemes like the prefixes Se-, le- and di- in nouns that are part of Sesotho idiomatic lexemes which is an irregular pattern with regard to Sesotho grammar. The paradox is that it is a language piece that is used every day and the speakers of Sesotho consider it a correct way of expressing oneself, but it violates the rules of Sesotho language. This gives a Sesotho idiom its unique characteristic. The study will discuss further the exception from the norm of the idiomatic structure of Sesotho idiom with regard to its linguistic nature. The study analyses an idiomatic expression as a sentence with regard to the agreement of a subject, verb and object structure to establish the pattern of Sesotho idiom as a linguistic unit. The study will draw examples from idiomatic expression in everyday language as spoken in the public gatherings, church, schools and literary writings. Furthermore informal conversations and the media where the idiomatic expressions arc spoken also offer invaluable sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
