Abstract: The British railway is one of the most complex mixed traffic railways in the world. Increasing patronage, and the need to improve performance, have led to industry research on how rail capacity could be better understood and utilised. Two recent studies conducted by Network Rail have focused on the Brighton Mainline as a whole railway system. By using systematic analysis and systems modelling these studies have provided new insight into ways of improving system performance. The results demonstrate for the first time, the significant benefit of both planning a timetable to accurately reflect the operational conditions of the railway and increasing precision across the system. It has made a compelling case for system change supported by modelled and observed evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
