Prophecy on the return journey was probably a recurring theme in ancient Greek epic. Scholars have noticed many similarities between two episodes of the Odyssey: prophecy of Tiresia to Odysseus (Od. 11. 100-49) and the one of Proteus to Menelaus (Od. 4. 473-569). A structural and narratological analysis seems to show that the two texts are variations of the same epic theme. Furthermore, this paper attempts a reconstruction of two episodes of the Cyclic Nostoi - a prophecy of Achilles' ghost to Agamemnon and Thetis' advices to Neoptolemus- in order to demonstrate that this theme was also widespread in the lost cyclic epic. Finally, the way in which this kind of prophecy foreshadowed the pattern of a nostos suggests that such a recurring scheme could have played some specific role in oral epic recitation.
