Abstrakt: | The article examines rape, romance and resistance in Hester Pulter's seventeenth-century prose romance, "The Unfortunate Florinda." Topics discussed include the prose as a common argument for individual agency's ascendancy over a determinative Fortune or Providence, rewriting of the centuries-old La Cava tale, the character Fidelia, a pagan princess who converts to Christianity and flees her native Barbary and the prose as a post-Restoration condemnation of monarchical absolutism. |
