Abstrakt: The article discusses the rivalry between sopranos Catherine Tofts and Margarita de l'Epine in the 18th-century opera scene in London, England. Topics discussed include political animosity created by the cultural rivalry, how rival political parties the Tories and the Whigs considered the two sopranos as cultural symbols, and concert series organized by the Tories for l'Epine and the Whigs for Tofts in 1703 and 1704.
