Abstrakt: Grinding of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic induces surface and subsurface defects, which are known to significantly deteriorate the mechanical properties of the ceramic. In this research work, carbon dioxide (CO2) laser assisted modification process was applied to heal the grinding-induced surface damage on Si3N4 ceramic. SEM, micro-hardness, and flexural strength analysis showed significant improvement of surface integrity and resulting mechanical properties in MOR (modulus of rupture) bar samples. XRD analysis indicated that the CO2 laser processing did not disturb the primary Si3N4 phase. Based on the experimental matrix, optimum CO2 processing parameters were determined to successfully eliminate grinding-induced damage in Si3N4 ceramic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
