Abstrakt: | The present paper regards the peculiarities of Jewish text in contemporary Latvian literature based on the analysis of Guntis Berelis' novel Vārdiem nebija vietas (Words Were of No Use). Contemporary Latvian literature demonstrates an example of transformation of Jewish text from the awareness of the opposition 'one's own - alien' to the incorporation of Jewish text in the concept of 'us'. Berelis' novel is based on the material of the historical events of World War I that provides a new, untraditional context for Jewish text. The focus of attention is not just Jewish characters per se; the novel includes a model of another Jewish text - the process of shooting a movie Ebreju kursistes traģēdija (Tragedy of a Jewish student). Berelis' novel provides not just a separate Jewish theme but a complete Jewish text with all constituent parts including the tragic fate of a Jewish character and Jewish people, pogroms in Bessarabia, the emotional colouring of Jewish art. The paper applies the interdisciplinary approach and combines the analysis of a cinematic and literary text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
