Explains that the early motion picture industry in Spain was characterized by a number of paradoxes and suffered from various limitations on production and from a poverty of creative resources. Between 1906 and 1920, Barcelona grew to become the most important film center in the country. A substantial number of companies related to film production and distribution established themselves there, though turnover for all of them remained poor. The films of this period was derivative of that being done or already done abroad with regard to subject matter, genres, or trends. Yet this derivation was not formulated with the same meanings or semantics as that employed by other European filmmakers. Spanish cinema did not have enough time to assimilate the stages of construction which had been absorbed relatively harmoniously by French filmmakers. With the cinema of attractions yet to be fully digested, Spain was already looking to produce narrative cinema. |
