Digital technologies (Industry 4.0) create new standards in the worldwide business. In particular, small crafts enterprises (also service providers) usually show very low efforts in adopting new technologies into their business despite large profit potentials. The basic changes in different industrial sectors caused by digital technologies follow some common principles. In this study, we analyze these principles and how their knowledge can be used to explore new innovation potentials in SMEs and crafts enterprises. We build a framework that can identify innovation potentials and provide generic strategies to utilize them. Thus, our framework consists of two steps--the first step of the analysis is "where" to search for innovations within the business environment and the second step provides generic strategies of "how" digital innovations and efficiency measures would look. To analyze the business environment, we adopt the Porter's matrix of the five competitive forces to focus more on the digital environment. This "digital" Porter's matrix exhaustively describes all the forces of the market and is the key source of our "where" analysis. To elaborate upon generic innovation strategies, we analyzed the most influential and most crucial key drivers of digital innovation. We split the strategy analysis into two parts--a process part and a data part. While the process part shows the key principles of digitalization today, the data part describes how to deal with digital data. All digital innovations are based on data; thus, digital data and digital data management are the most import cross-sectional technologies. We demonstrate the usage of our framework based on a case study that analyzes the fulfilment process in a crafts enterprise. We show that our framework provides valuable input on where to search for innovation potentials, which measures could probably be used, and finally how to improve the fulfilment process.
