High school education results would be more effective if the educa-tional process took into consideration the students' interests, desires and personal char-acteristics. The aim of this research is to find out how to determine the students' training needs as well as build up and help pursue a personal trajectory of the prospective teach-er while delivering courses in Pedagogy. Methods of observation, analysis of the results of students' activity and experi-ment in which about 1,000 students took part, were used in the course of the research. Building up one's personal learning trajectory is a collaborative effort of professors and students in which students identify their goals and objectives, ways and sources of pro-fessional self-development and self-education. This process implies the following stag-es: the preliminary stage which includes diagnostics, motivation, goal-setting and plan-ning; the main stage seen in the fulfillment of the students' individual programs and learning trajectories; the reflective and analytical stage which involves identifying ways and means of further professional self-development. The paper in hand is focused on the analysis of goal-setting methods and ways of designing one's learning activity including "professional growth maps", individual plans for study courses, portfolios, diagnostic cards as well as methods used in the pro-cess of training and assessing students' achievements. It is proved that there exist spe-cial ways to increase the effectiveness of education, contribute to the development of professional abilities and interests of students and stimulate their cognitive activity, in-dependence and creativity. These ways consist in using methods simulating one's pro-fessional activity - professional content of educational activities; using methods and re-sources which support the shaping of one's subject position, reflexivity; mastering the ways of goal-setting in the process of teaching and upbringing, experience of group co-operation and collaboration etc. The paper presents the results which show the development of professional competencies of a prospective teacher. The effectiveness increases in the context of co-operation between professors and students, in case students are offered the opportunity to select the content and methods of learning activities and see their results submitted in the form of a rating assessment system, conditions for self-assessment and diagnostics being created.
