St. Petersburg, with a population of over 5 million people, is situated on more than 35 islands, which leads to the unique challenges when planning its transport system. 15 rivers, that have active summer navigation, are impassable for ships most of the year. Consequently, the availability of health care is not equable for the residents of St. Petersburg. Geographic information systems can be used to identify gaps to ensure public healthcare and to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures taken to improve the transport accessibility of health facilities. In this article, we analyze how the attendance of public health care institutions is connected to their location and dependence on the transport system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
