Abstrakt: Automation has replaced most manual cartographic operations with machines capable of producing copy with increased precision at lower cost. The production of shaded relief or "hill-shading" is one area of manual cartographic techniques that has defied automation longer than others. This Supplement shows six examples of automated relief representation. Automated hill shading using the same software was produced on a cathode ray tube display at the University of Maryland. The overlay information showing surface cover (dots for orchards and vineyards, squares for settlements) was produced separately at the Harvard University Computing Center.
