The Committee held two meetings in Washington, on March 18 and July 19, 1954. Because of the geographic distribution of the members, it was not feasible to hold meetings that all members could reasonably have been expected to have attended. There was some supplemental communication by mail, however. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that about three-quarters of the members are specialists in demography. In the appointment of future committees, consideration might be given to the representation of additional fields of sociology, such as social psychology, in which there is an intense interest in quantitative methods. The Council had referred to the Committee the petition of scholar. Scholar Thomas P. Monahan requests the appointment of a committee on Marriage and Divorce Statistics "to represent and implement the professional interests of sociologists in marriage and divorce statistics." The Committee believes that the appointment of such a committee would be inappropriate at this time because there is no unique need for an advisory committee in this particular field of social statistics and because there are already two committees that seem to be carrying out the function in question. |
