Pumped hydro energy storage is capable of largescale energy time-shifting and a variety of ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage control. Recent studies [1-3] show Australia can build an affordable and secure electricity network with 100% renewable energy, using photovoltaics, wind, existing hydroelectricity and biomass with the support of short-term off-river pumped hydro energy storage (STORES). This article introduces a series of recent studies on STORES at the Australian National University including energy balance modelling of 50-100% renewable electricity in Australia's energy markets, which highlights the significant roles of STORES to support high integration of renewable energy sources, and Geographic Information System-based site searching, through which over 22,000 potential sites across Australia have been identified for the future development of STORES sites.
