Abstrakt: The Chemnitz University of Technology is working on developing a method for estimating the material damping for process designing in the case of ultrasonic welding by balancing the process-specific energy values from the new type of ultrasonic melting test. Since the engineering process and the material classification take account of the material damping to an insufficient extent only, the new testing method offers the users the possibility of detecting this in a simple, time-efficient and cost-favourable way. This results in advantages with regard to the component dimensioning and configuration as well as to the process designing. If the required process energy is estimated in good time, it is possible to avoid the costs caused by any faulty designs or flawed process designing. Furthermore, any material influences and batch fluctuations can be established without delay in the event of cost-intensive production downtimes and the resulting troubleshooting. The results portrayed here demonstrate the potential of this new testing method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
