Seizure control is more in the hands of the patient and the caregiver. The prognosis of the epilepsy depends on the understanding and compliance of the patient and person entrusted with the management of the disease. Hence a study was conducted with the objective to develop knowledge and skills of caregivers of epileptic patients on home management of epilepsy. An operational study was carried out on caregivers of 60 epileptic patients.Tools used for data collection were interview schedule on socio-demographic profile of patients and baseline information related to epilepsy and its management at home. The protocol was prepared to educate the caregivers regarding home management of epilepsy in the form of flip book and booklet. After collecting baseline information on home management of epileptic patients they were educated as per protocol and booklet was given to them. There after weekly follow ups were done for a month to assess their knowledge and skill of caregivers on home management of epileptic patients. The results show that the subjects gained proficiency in maximum aspects of home management of epilepsy. There were some aspects in which the caregivers have gained full proficiency and those were diet and behaviors to be avoided. But there were some aspects in which the caregivers lacked behind and those were knowledge related to types of disease, various risk factors and facts related to disease condition. During the study positive behavior of the epileptic patients was observed related to treatment and giving up addictions. The treatment was initiated by three patients and restarted by one patient during the study. Two patients gave up smoking and alcohol during the study. Hence it is concluded that educating the care givers of epileptic patients with regular follow ups helps them in managing the patient at home. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
