The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pine bark extract (PBE) on serum low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in healthy subjects. The results of a clinical trial with PBE have already been published in our previous study; however, the study included subjects with serum LDL-C levels >139 mg/dL. We reanalyzed the study in subjects with serum LDL-C levels <140 mg/dL. After 12 weeks, LDL-C improved significantly in the 80 mg PBE group compared with the placebo group (p<0.05). In the 80 mg PBE group, LDL-C levels improved significantly after 8, 12 (p<0.05), and 16 weeks (p<0.01) compared with the levels before treatment. The results of this study suggest that consumption of PBE improves LDL-C levels in subjects with serum LDL-C levels <140 mg/dL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
