The article examines the relationship between socialism and esotericism in July Monarchy France. It discusses the employment of the signifiers mysticisme, théosophie, or illuminisme to understand such relationship. It examines the term ésotérisme in Pierre Leroux's work in the context of the debates about Christianity's origin. It also argues that many socialist were enthusiastic about mystical or theosophical ideas which did not constitute a single esoteric tradition. |
