'Introduction: Usage of rotary root canal instruments by endodontists and pedodontist in Gujarat is not welldocumented. Therefore, the aim of this study was to retrieve data from a representative sample of endodontists and pedodontist regarding contemporary usage of rotary instruments and to ascertain the extent of adoption and use of rotary systems for cleaning and shaping of root canals amongst Endodontists and Pedodontists of Gujarat state. Material and Method: A questionnaire addressing (1) nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instrument usage and its demographics and (2) its extent of adoption in various cases was constructed. The forms were either hand delivered or mailed to 65 Endodontists and 16 Pedodontists of Gujarat state. Data were collected from respondents by contacting personally or post mails over a period of 1 month. Results: Usages and the extent of adoption varied by age, case selection and the years of practice.71% respondents were using rotary instruments only in the past 5 years 32% dentists were using rotary instrumentation techniques in more than 80% of cases for cleaning and shaping of root canals. 25-30%use rotary only in posteriors and 30-35% uses rotary techniques in cases without severe curvature or any complications.lnterestingly, 81% respondents prefer using ProTaper files. 78% respondents use electronic torque and speed control devices to operate the rotary files. Conclusions: The dentists were well aware of the limitations of rotary endodontics and were getting advantages from newer techniques along with taking appropriate precautions to prevent unfavorable events. This response indicates a responsible attitude by an increasing number of dentists adopting a new technology that has clear benefits over traditional techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
