Abstrakt: This article wants to contribute to the enhancement of theoretical and methodological reflection in Dutch studies. The more specific aim is to provide a theoretical and methodological framework to study the relationship between literature and culture in general and between literature and science in particular. In this respect the basic assumption is that the relationship between literature and science is dynamic and mutual. This is not the end of the story, but just the beginning, because it leaves the historian of literature with the challenge to analyse amalgams which cannot easily be divided into a scientific and a literary component. The second part of the contribution brings into focus the question to what extent theories on the relationship between text and context, which are current in the history of literature (systems theory, discourse analysis, New Historicism), offer methodological ammunition to face up to this challenge. Finally, we shall propose a way that one can fruitfully handle some tricky questions in the practice of historical research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
