Background: The uscof tobacco leads to precancerous and cancerous lesions in die oral tissues. Anearlypredictorof lesions of such lethal nature is the proliferative activity of cells in oral tissues and the proliferative activity of cells could be noticed in the silver staining nu cleolar organiser regions (AgNORs)of cells. Method: 1 he buccal smears of 50 subjects using tobacco for aperiodof 2 to 30 years were stainedand counted for AgNORs. Results: The p value (0.001) in the study is significant It shows a good correlation between the number of mean AgNORs and proliferation activity of cells. Conclusion: The present study was carried out to evaluate the use of AgNORs in exfoliated buccal mucosal cells as definitive proliferative markers following tobacco use. AgNORcounts in exfoliated buccal mucosal cells offer a simple painless and inexpensive way for screening in cancer control programmes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
