Abstrakt: The invention of the middle ear increased sensitivity and broadened the audible frequency range. These changes in the periphery entailed changes in the central auditory system as well. Since the middle ear evolved independently in mammals and birds, the auditory system provides an outstanding opportunity to gain insight into parallel evolutionary processes of the nervous system. Here we highlight the importance of developmental genetics for this understanding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
