Abstrakt: Background: Patients usually feel anxious about undergoing an upper GI endoscopy. However, the fear of the procedure and anticipated discomfort is usually more than what they actually experience during the procedure, Objective: The objective of our study was to determine the patients' perception about undergoing an upper GI endoscopy with the help of a questionnaire before and after the procedure. Patients and Methods: A total of 60 patients who met inclusion criteria were selected. Based on previous studies, 18 simple questions were prepared regarding various patient concerns about an upper GI endoscopy. Patients were asked to replythe questions on a 7 point Likert Scale before and after undergoing the procedure. The study took place in the Dowites Operation Theater Complex Endoscopy Suite during a period of 3 months. Mean patient scores before and after the procedure were compared using paired t-test. P value ≤ 0.05 was taken as significant. Results: Patient's perception regarding undergoing an upper GI endoscopy was significantly better after the procedure than before. Their perception about the overall care improved after the procedure (mean Likert score before the procedure, 2.93 ± 1.11 vs after the procedure, 2.57 ± 1.06, p value 0.000). Similarly, their overall satisfaction score was better after the procedure than before (3.00 ± 1.39 vs 2.60 ± 1.21 respectively, p value 0.001). Conclusion: After undergoing the procedure, most of the patients realized that the upper GI endoscopy was safe and well tolerated. Disseminating the results of this study will help to reduce patient anxiety and improve the acceptance of the procedure in our part of the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
