The practice of placing smokeless tobacco or chewing tobacco in the oral cavity and leaving it in place for extended periods of time appears to be finding its way onto middle school, high school, and college campuses as a socially acceptable and popular habit. In adults the oral changes are seen to be associated with the use of smokeless tobacco, but not in the lower age groups. A study on oral tissue changes associated with smokeless tobacco users of age group 15-30 years was carried out in 400 individuals of North Indian Population, of which 200 individuals were smokeless tobacco users and 200 were from the control group (not associated with any tobacco habit). A detailed questionnaire to obtain the history and oral examination to note the dental, mucosal, gingival and periodontal changes was done. It was observed that the smokeless tobacco habit is prevalent in males, with Male: Female ratio to be 5:1. It was found that 15-30 years was the most common age to start the habit of smokeless tobacco and gutka was the most commonly used chewing material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
