Abstrakt: Soon after the break-in at the Democratic Party's headquarters in the Watergate building in 1972, journalists began to coin neologisms with gate. Recent examples are Monicagate or Zippergate. Many of the English coinages were readily borrowed by other languages. In Dutch this led to the possibility of own coinages like kippengate or Bolkgate. In this article the story of gate is told, from the beginnings (in English) to the recent possibilities, especially in Dutch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
