Abstrakt: Given the increasing significance of business model in connected economy, a new stream of literature has turned to explore business model design's antecedents. Beyond the external antecedents derived from rational position view, little research has investigated the role of internal manufacturing flexibility. Based on the theory of constraints and business ecosystem theory, this research examines how manufacturing flexibility affects efficiency-centered and novelty- centered business model design, and then firm performance. We proposed 8 hypotheses and collected data from 186 manufacturing firms in China to exam them. The results indicate that manufacturing flexibility promotes both efficiency- and novelty-centered business model designs. Furthermore, competitive intensity strengthens while demand heterogeneity weakens the relationship between manufacturing flexibility and efficiency-centered business model design. On the contrast, competitive intensity weakens while demand heterogeneity strengthens the relationship between manufacturing flexibility and novelty-centered business model design.
