The German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate aims to cover 100% of the state's gross electricity demand from renewable sources by the year 2030. A distribution system study for Rhineland-Palatinate was commissioned by the government of the state to analyse the technical, economic and legal prerequisites for this ambitious goal and to suggest options for action. By the year 2030, 7,500 megawatts of wind power plants are expected to be installed in Rhineland-Palatinate. This paper describes how the effect of installed wind power on power system expansion cost was calculated in the study. Scenarios were developed to investigate the use of various flexibility options (such as curtailment or storage) to minimise the required investment in new network infrastructure.
