Education abroad participation is a growing trend among today's college students, yet accessibility and affordability remains an issue. Quality education abroad programming has been found to foster global citizenship (Lewin, 2009; Skelly, 2009) and boost foreign language acquisition (Engle & Engle, 2012; Kolb, 2009). It can also bolster foreign diplomacy (Hovey & Weinberg, 2009) and contribute to economic prosperity and national security (Kolb, 2009)--all of which remain goals of the U.S. government. With targeted support--financial, structural, and symbolic--via the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, the U.S. government can provide greater access to education abroad programming and contribute to national and global development.
