The article discusses Section 5 of the 1965 U.S. Voting Rights Act in relation to the possibility that voter suppression helped then-American presidential candidate Donald Trump secure a victory in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The history of racial discrimination in America is addressed, along with the voting rights-based case Shelby County v. Holder and the loss of voters' legal protections. U.S. voting laws are assessed. |
