This article presents an analysis of the employment and unemployment data in the U.S. The unemployment rate remained at 6.1 percent in September 2003 and total nonfarm payroll employment was little changed. Both total employment, 137.6 million, and the employment population ratio, 62.0 percent, were about unchanged in September. Manufacturing employment decreased by 29,000 in September 2003. Employment in financial activities remains on an upward trend, though at a reduced pace. Detailed data from the survey and its analysis is provided in the article. |
