Knowledge, Awareness and Misconceptions of Oral Cancer among High-Risk Populations in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

Abstrakt: Objective This study aims in assessing knowledge, awareness and misconceptions about, oral cancer among high-risk population in Guntur. Materials and Methods A questionnaire-based study was performed on 1000 individuals divided into five groups over a period of three months in Guntur. The questionnaire was designed to ascertain socio-demographic data, level of knowledge and awareness along with misconceptions about oral cancer. Data analysis was carried out using Chi square test. Results The study group consisted of 905 males and 95 females with mean age being 37 years. A majority of the participants indicated that men (76.9%) and adults (80.4%) are commonly affected by oral cancer. 95.7% of individuals are aware of warnings mentioned on tobacco products and alcohol. Misconceptions on oral cancer like low cigarette/gutkha consumption is less injurious (43%), conviction on traditional treatment modalities like Ayurveda and herbs for treating oral cancer (33.3%) still persists. Conclusion The results of this study highlight that there is a strong need to address public on oral cancer throughcampaigns including TV, radio broadcasts, powerpoint presentations, information brochures, catch phrases and articles in newspapers.
