Abstrakt: Over the past decade, prescription drug misuse and abuse has emerged as a significant and growing public health problem in the United States. Federal and state officials have advocated for and created state-based prescription drug monitoring programs ("PDMPs") as a policy tool to help public health and law enforcement officials address this emerging epidemic. In this paper, we provide an overview of Indiana's PDMP, known as the Indiana Scheduled Prescription Electronic Collection and Tracking ("INSPECT") Program, and summarize key findings from analyses of the early impact of the implementation of the program in Indiana. Overall, the evaluation suggests that INSPECT is having an impact both in reversing the aggregate supply of prescription drugs, especially opioids, and changing the attitudes as well as the prescribing and dispensing behavior of providers across the Hoosier state.
