Organizationally Sponsored Professional Development.

Abstrakt: With the complex demands placed on teachers today, how do practicing and novice educators keep current and enhance their skills? Mandates by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) require teachers who hold Professional Teaching Certificates and Level III teaching assistants to participate in professional development to maintain their licenses. In this study, two university professors examined two years of data on organization membership, as well as attendees, presenters, and topics offered at conferences and workshops sponsored by a state English council, a local language arts council, and a local university chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. The authors identified a decrease in attendance at the state conference and proposed ways to enhance participation and support compliance with NYSED regulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
