80 fourth-grade children learned a verbal discrimination list with reward being the only source of feedback. Using a 2 x 2 factorial design, reinforcement was either varied on a trial-by-trial basis or constant throughout the task and was either subject-selected or experimenter-selected. Subjects who selected their own reward objects and those receiving varied reinforcement performed more poorly than their counterparts. Since subjects experience greater satiation with constant than with variable reinforcers, these findings suggest that satiation may operate to diminish the incentive value of material reward objects during the course of the experiment and thus reduce their detrimental effects upon performance.
