Abstrakt: The gift of around 180 of Sir Francis Chantrey's full-size plaster models to the Ashmolean Museum after the sculptor's death in 1841 was partially engineered by William Buckland, former Professor of Geology at the University of Oxford. It was the final act of a long friendship between Chantrey and Buckland, who were bound by mutual geological interests. Chantrey's involvement in the geological milieu of the early nineteenth century is a lesser-known aspect of his career. This article delineates Chantrey's contributions to the Geological Society, his mineralogical collections, his portraits of geologists, and the ways in which his practice and professional identity were influenced by his role in the geological milieu.
