Chronic diseases (CDs) have emerged as major public health problems due to large ageing population and environmentally-driven changes in behavior. Self-management practices of chronic diseases are of paramount importance in order to ensure the quality of life of the concerned patient. An exploratory study was undertaken in Dhanas village, Chandigarh to asses the self-management practices (SMP) and quality of life (QOL) of patients with CDs. A total of 108 individuals suffering with chronic diseases were enrolled in the study by total enumeration sampling technique. Semi-structured interview schedule was used to assess the self-management practices of patients suffering with chronic diseases and a standardized tool (WHO Quality of life-BREF) was used to assess that quality of life. Interview and bio-physiological observations were the techniques employed for data collection. The mean age of the subjects was 54,82±14.16 years with a range of 35-85 years. More than 50% of the subjects were females, 60% were literate and 80% were unemployed. Seventy five percent of the subjects were not doing exercise regularly. Majority (85%) of the subjects had modified their dietary pattern. More than 50% of the subjects were leading good quality life in terms of psychological, social and environmental domains. It was found that drug compliance, regular investigation and regular follow-up were not appropriate because of the lack of awareness among the community people. There is a need to improve their knowledge and skill in managing disease. So that they will be able to manage the diseases, prevent complications and hence lead a quality life.
