Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown cause that may involve the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, eyes, liver, spleen, central nervous system and bones. Sarcoidosis may involve any part of the eye and the eyelids. Ocular involvement usually begins within six months to a year after the onset of hilar adenopathy. There may be discrete nodules on the stroma of the iris and "mutton fat" precipitates on the posterior part of the cornea or over the iris. Conjunctival follicles with granulomatous histopathology of the sarcoid type also occur. Conjunctival biopsy, a simple diagnostic procedure, is useful for the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. |
