| Abstrakt: | Modern understanding of civil society is ambiguous, controversial and of particular interest. That is why the article is devoted to one of the most pressing issues — defining the essential characteristics of civil society. Attention is drawn to contemporary debates about the essence of the concept of«civil society» and its place in social science. Attempts are being made on the basis of the study the controversial nature of civil society to find its essence and peculiarities of its formation at the present stage. The article contains the main features of civil society; it draws attention to a certain subordination of civil society spheres, due to unequal everyday interests of citizens.
